Dissertation | Philipp von Becker

The central hypothesis of Philipp von Beckers doctoral project is that the category of personal data and the associated individual data protection rights are not sufficient to comprehensively protect the informational self-determination of individuals in the age of Big Data. Therefore a further development of collective and relational concepts of data protection and data governance seem to be necessary. In this respect, the study focuses on the analysis of the data governance models of data cooperatives and data trusts. The study asks to what extent these could be suitable for strengthening the informational self-determination of individuals, what possible obstacles, contradictions and presumptions exist and what further conditions would have to be considered in order to fulfil their proclaimed emancipatory potential.
